Remember Skibbereen!!

Skibbereen is to feature on the national airwaves this weekend with the broadcast of the documentary The Great Irish Famine: Remember Skibbereen which will be broadcast by TG4 this coming Sunday at 8.30pm.

The documentary was commissioned by Skibbereen Heritage Centre to mark the National Famine Commemoration which took place in Skibbereen last year. The film gives an overview of the famine and how it affected the people of skibbereen and surrounding areas.

The documentary includes interviews with some well-known historians including Professor Joe Lee of New York University (formerly UCC) and Dr Larry Geary of UCC, but also features local West Cork historians with an interest in the subject.


Martial Law in Skibbereen

For a few hours last night and today, the army are running Skibbereen. A 40 strong Platoon from Collins Barracks in Cork was dispatched last evening after Cork County Council requested military help ahead of the expectation that the deluge would result in the Ilen river breaching its banks and flooding the town for the third time in 8 weeks.

The business people in the town today welcomed the intervention that saw thousands of sandbags being filled overnight and delivered to the town this morning. Rest assured however, that after this emergency, authority will be returned to the council and martial law will cease.

Skibbereen Bank Robbery

There was a bank robbery in Skibbereen this morning.

The perpetrators robbed the Skibbereen branch of Bank of Ireland at 11:15, then they crashed their getaway car and then they hijacked a car from a woman who was filling her petrol tank at the nearby Costcutter petrol station. Luckily her children had hopped out of the car prior to the hijacking.

West Cork Gardai are now searching for the armed gang which held up staff at the Bank of Ireland on Market street and made off with an undisclosed sum of cash. (more…)
