Dunnes Stores for Skibbereen?

April 29, 2010

Today’s Southern Star has a piece on a planning application for a shopping centre on the outskirts of Skibbereen that may see Dunnes win the race versus Tesco to set up an outlet in Skibbereen.

The application was lodged on April 20th for eight acres at Carrigfadda, to the rear of Leonard Motors on the Tragumna Road however given the traffic constraints already in getting to that side of town since Lidl was opened at the same roundabout it is likely there will be several objectors. Any such development would make so much more sense north of the twon given the superior road infrastructure.

Ferry site launched

February 16, 2010

The new Irish Sea Ferry link between the UK and Ireland is set to launch within 2 weeks. The operating company Fastnet Line has launched a new website to replace the temporary site that was in place over the past months.

The new website incorporates the WebRes booking engine and provides comprehensive information on the ferry and both Cork & Swansea.

The website is expected to be a major pillar of success for the Fastnet line and was built by Skibbereen based Granite Consulting.

Born in the West Cork Hotel, here’s hoping the new Irish ferry service is a driver of tourism in Skibbereen and beyond.

Martial Law in Skibbereen

January 12, 2010

For a few hours last night and today, the army are running Skibbereen. A 40 strong Platoon from Collins Barracks in Cork was dispatched last evening after Cork County Council requested military help ahead of the expectation that the deluge would result in the Ilen river breaching its banks and flooding the town for the third time in 8 weeks.

The business people in the town today welcomed the intervention that saw thousands of sandbags being filled overnight and delivered to the town this morning. Rest assured however, that after this emergency, authority will be returned to the council and martial law will cease.
